Our expedition took us to the northern part of Lesotho today. What a unique place: completely encircled by South Africa, but nonetheless protected by imposing mountains all around. Long the domain of hunter-gatherers, in the 19th century the Sotho people took over; it then became a British protectorate, only to gain independence in 1966. Lesotho’s highest peak is Thabana Ntlenyana (3,482 m), but the entire country is used to life in the clouds: its lowest point is 1,400 meters!
